Padjelanta National Park
National Park Vast Swedish national park with Sami reindeer herding
In Swedish Lapland, Padjelanta protects vast alpine plateaus, kettle lakes and Sami summer grazing lands; long‑distance hikers use its trails to reach mountain huts and experience remote tundra scenery.
Padjelanta National Park is a large national park in northern Sweden, within the province of Lapland, and is part of the Laponia UNESCO World Heritage Site. The park is characterised by wide alpine plateaus, extensive lakes and ongoing Sami reindeer herding.
Visitors find remote tundra landscapes, long-distance trails and traditional Sami summer pasturelands; facilities are minimal and travel in the park is typically by foot, boat or by crossing from small mountain settlements. The area is noted for summer wildflower displays and open, flat highland terrain.
Padjelanta was established as a national park in the 20th century and later included in the Laponia World Heritage inscription which recognises both its natural values and the cultural practices of the indigenous Sami people. Traditional reindeer herding continues to shape the landscape.
The park lies in far northern Sweden, north of the Arctic Circle in Lapland, and is accessible from small towns and mountain villages on its southern and eastern edges.
- Laponia World Heritage: Part of the Laponia UNESCO World Heritage Site, which recognises the area's natural and cultural landscape shaped by Sami reindeer herding.
- Remoteness: Located north of the Arctic Circle, the park is remote and access typically requires long drives, boat crossings or multi-day treks in summer.
What to See #
- Staloluokta: Staloluokta is a small traditional Sami settlement on the shore of Lake Virihaure that functions as a seasonal base for hikers and boat crossings into the park.
- Virihaure Lake: Virihaure (Virihaure Lake) is one of the largest lakes in the park and a central landscape feature used for fishing, boat access and as a waypoint on long-distance routes.
