Oystermouth Castle

Oystermouth Castle is a medieval stone castle at Mumbles on the southern edge of Swansea, Wales. It is a well-preserved example of a medieval borough castle with substantial curtain walls and towers.

The surviving curtain walls, towers and gate settings define a clear inner ward and outer ward, giving a tangible sense of medieval defensive layout. Walkways and ramparts provide raised vantage points with views over Mumbles Head and Swansea Bay. Displays in the site explain the castle’s role in local medieval administration and defense.

Constructed and developed in the medieval period, the castle served as a regional stronghold and administrative center for the local lords. It remained an important local fortification through later medieval centuries and has been conserved and interpreted in modern times.

Sited at Mumbles on the southern coast of Swansea, overlooking Mumbles Bay and the entrance to Swansea Bay. The castle sits within the historic core of Mumbles village on the Gower peninsula’s eastern edge.
