Oxford Castle

Oxford Castle is a Norman-era castle and former prison in central Oxford, England, founded by Robert D’Oyly around 1071. It forms one of the oldest historic complexes in the city and retains a prominent motte and a surviving medieval tower.

The site presents the castle mound and stone tower as the main visitor highlights, with guided tours that cover the medieval fortifications and the complex’s later use as a gaol. Interpretive displays and tours typically explain the sequence from motte-and-bailey earthwork to stone castle and then to prison, and visitors can climb the tower for views over the city.

Construction began in the late 11th century under Norman authority as a motte-and-bailey; stone buildings and defensive works were added in subsequent medieval centuries. The complex was adapted and used as a county prison for many centuries before that use ended in the late 20th century.

The castle stands in central Oxford, within the historic core of the city and a short walk from Oxford’s main shopping streets and transport links. It lies on the north side of the city centre close to the River Thames and existing medieval street pattern.
