How to Get to Outjo#

Outjo is best reached by road from Windhoek or Otjiwarongo. Rent a car for the most flexibility; regular coach services also connect Windhoek with northern towns, with onward local transfers to Outjo.

By Air

Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH), Windhoek: The main international arrival point for Namibia; Outjo is about 280-350 km from Windhoek depending on route (roughly 4-5 hours by car). From Windhoek you can rent a car or use intercity coach services to reach Outjo.

Ondangwa (OND) / Otjiwarongo (OTJ - airstrips): Otjiwarongo has a small airfield and regional access; some charter flights serve northern Namibia. For most travellers heading to Outjo, overland travel from Windhoek or Otjiwarongo is the usual choice.

By Train & Bus

Train: Namibia has limited passenger rail services and they do not provide convenient passenger access to Outjo; rail is not a practical option for most travellers to Outjo.

Bus / Coach: Intercape and other regional coach operators run services between Windhoek and northern towns; coaches and private shuttles are common for travellers to Outjo-journey times are several hours, depending on stops and route.

How to Get Around Outjo#

Driving from Windhoek or Otjiwarongo is the most practical way to reach Outjo. Coaches and organised transfers exist but renting a vehicle gives the best flexibility for sightseeing and access to national parks.

  • Car / Rental car (NAD 600-1,200/day) - Self-drive is the preferred way to reach Outjo and explore the surrounding area (including Etosha National Park). Distances are long but roads between major towns are generally in good condition; 4x4 is useful for unpaved side roads.
  • Intercity coach (e.g., Intercape / private shuttles) - Coaches connect Windhoek with northern towns and are an economical option; book in advance during peak travel periods. Expect a multi-hour journey with stops.
  • Taxi / Private transfer - Private transfers are available and convenient for shorter distances or if you prefer door-to-door service from airports or lodges; prices vary by provider.
  • Tour operator / safari transfer - Many travellers reach Outjo as part of organised tours to Etosha. Tour operators provide pick-up and drop-off services and handle park logistics-good for hassle-free wildlife trips.
  • Bicycle - Bicycle use is possible for local excursions but distances and temperatures make cycling less practical for long trips around the region.
  • Walking - Outjo town centre is small and easily explored on foot; walking is the simplest way to get around locally for shops and restaurants.
