How to Get to Ouidah

Ouidah is easiest reached via Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport (COO) followed by a short road transfer. Overland connections use shared minibuses and taxis from Cotonou's transport hubs.

By Air

Cotonou Cadjehoun Airport (COO): The main international airport for southern Benin is Cotonou. Ouidah is about 40-50 km west of Cotonou - transfer by taxi or shared minibus is common and takes around 45-75 minutes depending on traffic. Typical shared‑taxi or shuttle fares are roughly 500-1,500 XOF per person; private taxis cost more.

Porto‑Novo (no major airport): Porto‑Novo does not have major scheduled flights - most international arrivals use Cotonou and then travel by road to the Atlantique coast.

By Train & Bus

Train: Benin has no passenger rail service connecting Cotonou and Ouidah.

Bus / Road: Regular bush taxis/shared minibuses (sometimes called gbaka or zémidjan for very short hops) run between Cotonou and Ouidah from the main bus/transport hubs in Cotonou. The drive is roughly 45-75 minutes; expect to pay about 500-1,500 XOF for a shared minibus and more for a private taxi. Local moto‑taxis (zémidjan) handle very short trips within Ouidah.

How to Get Around Ouidah #

Ouidah’s centre is walkable for visiting the main sights along the Route des Esclaves, but distances to some sites are best covered by moto-taxi or shared taxi. Zémidjans (motorcycle taxis) are common and cheap for short hops; always agree a price before you ride. Intercity travel uses shared taxis or bush taxis; expect simple roadside stops and flexible schedules, and take care after dark when services thin out.
