The Ouachita Mountains are a folded mountain range in the south-central United States, primarily in Arkansas and Oklahoma, notable for their east-west orientation and wooded ridges. The range extends roughly 220 miles (about 350 km) and forms part of the Interior Highlands.

The area is used for hiking, fishing, hunting, and scenic drives across rounded sandstone and shale ridges. The Ouachita National Recreation Trail runs about 223 miles across the range and provides multi-day backpacking routes, while state parks and recreation areas offer shorter day hikes and river access.

The Ouachitas were formed during Paleozoic mountain-building events known as the Ouachita orogeny, roughly 300 million years ago, producing folded and faulted sedimentary rocks. More recently the area has been managed for timber and recreation and much of it is now contained within the Ouachita National Forest.

The range lies primarily across western Arkansas and southeastern Oklahoma, roughly between Little Rock and the Oklahoma interior, with the Ouachita National Forest and several state parks providing public access.

  • Extent and setting: Crosses roughly 220 miles east-west through central Arkansas into southeastern Oklahoma and forms part of the U.S. Interior Highlands.
  • Long-distance trail: The Ouachita National Recreation Trail provides a continuous 223-mile hiking route and is the longest continuous trail in the region.

What to See #

  • Ouachita National Forest: Covers more than 1.8 million acres of federally managed forest across Arkansas and Oklahoma and includes a mix of hardwood ridges, pine stands, and river valleys.
  • Ouachita National Recreation Trail: A long-distance footpath running roughly 223 miles across the range, used for multi-day backpacking between Talimena State Park in Oklahoma and Pinnacle Mountain State Park in Arkansas.
  • Hot Springs and state parks: Hot Springs and several state parks sit on the flanks of the mountains and provide trailheads, developed campgrounds, and access to scenic ridges and rivers.

How to Get to Ouachita Mountains #

The Ouachita Mountains span southeastern Oklahoma and western Arkansas and are most practically reached by car. Major approaches from Oklahoma City use I‑40 eastbound and then state and U.S. highways into the range (drivers commonly continue on routes such as US‑270/US‑271 or other regional highways depending on the specific destination in the range). From Oklahoma City the drive to central parts of the Ouachitas is roughly 3-4 hours (on the order of 280-320 km); once in the foothills follow local state highways and forest roads to trailheads and recreation areas.

Tips for Visiting Ouachita Mountains #

  • Aim for mid-October to early November (fall foliage) and go at first light on weekdays - the Talimena Scenic Byway and ridge overlooks are at their most photogenic and least crowded then.
  • Access the Oklahoma side of the Ouachitas via Talihina and follow the Talimena Scenic Byway for the easiest scenic pullouts and trailheads; this route gives the best panoramic overlooks without long backcountry approaches.
  • Many visitors stick to the main scenic overlooks - take short side trails from those overlooks to find quieter viewpoints and stretches of the Ouachita National Recreation Trail for solitude and better wildlife viewing.
