Osun-Osogbo
Monument Sacred Osun grove with traditional shrines and rituals
Around Osogbo, the Osun‑Osogbo Sacred Grove holds Yoruba shrines, ritual sculptures by artists like Susanne Wenger, and hosts the annual Osun‑Osogbo festival; visitors come for ritual, sculpture and traditional bead and woodcraft.
Osun-Osogbo is a sacred forest and cultural landscape on the outskirts of Osogbo city in Osun State, southwestern Nigeria, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2005. The site is centred on the river shrine dedicated to the Yoruba river-goddess Osun and includes shrines, sculptures and ritual spaces.
The grove contains dozens of sculpted works, shrine complexes, and carved pathways spread across roughly 75 hectares; many visitors follow the marked trails to see ritual sites, sculptural installations and the riverside shrine. Pilgrims attend the annual Osun-Osogbo festival, which features processions, offerings and traditional performances.
The contemporary form of the grove includes major contributions from local and international artists who worked in the mid-20th century to restore and elaborate shrine imagery, while the site itself has been a place of worship for centuries. Management combines traditional custodianship by local priests and community groups with state and international conservation measures since its inscription.
The site lies on the southern edge of Osogbo city in central Osun State, roughly 250 kilometres northeast of Lagos and immediately adjacent to the urban area, set in a patch of riverine forest along the banks of the Osun River.
- Osun festival: Festival held annually in August, attracting pilgrims and tourists to ritual performances and processions along the river.
- Best time to visit: Best visited early in the morning when shrine rituals and hush periods are observed and temperatures are cooler.
