Ōsumi-shotō (the Ōsumi Islands) are a chain of islands in Kagoshima Prefecture, south of Kyushu in southern Japan. The group forms part of the Satsunan Islands and includes several inhabited and uninhabited islands under Kagoshima administration.
The islands vary from low-lying coral and volcanic isles to larger, forested islands with rugged interior terrain. Key visitor attractions include the Tanegashima Space Center on Tanegashima and the ancient cedar forests and mountain scenery of Yakushima.
The archipelago has a volcanic origin and has been inhabited and used for fishing, agriculture and more recently tourism and space-related activities on Tanegashima. The islands are connected to Kyushu by ferry and air services on scheduled routes.
The Ōsumi Islands lie off the southeastern coast of Kyushu in Kagoshima Prefecture and are part of Japan’s southern island system, accessible from Kagoshima city and other regional transport hubs.

How to Get to Ōsumi-shotō #
Ōsumi-shotō (the Ōsumi Islands) are reached from Kagoshima Prefecture. Depending on which island you are visiting, travel options include ferries from Kagoshima Port and other local ports or short domestic flights to island airports that exist on some islands; schedules and durations vary by island. From Kagoshima city center the ports and airports are the usual departure points for ferries and flights.
Tips for Visiting Ōsumi-shotō #
- Check ferry and flight timetables from Kagoshima port well before travel-inter-island services to the Ōsumi islands (including Yakushima, Tanegashima and smaller isles) run on limited schedules and often require reservations, especially in high season.
- Avoid the typhoon season (typically summer-early autumn) when sea links can be canceled; if you need a firm return time, book overnight stays on the island rather than attempting a day trip dependent on weather.
- If you're targeting a specific island activity (turtle watching on Tanegashima, Yakushima hiking), confirm local transport and lodging in advance-services on smaller islands are limited and day‑of coordination can be difficult.
Best Time to Visit Ōsumi-shotō #
Best visited in spring or autumn to avoid the hot, humid rainy/typhoon season.
