Ostrov Shumshu
Island Kuril island with WWII battle sites and wetlands
Shumshu, in the Kuril chain off Sakhalin Oblast, features rugged volcanic terrain, seabird colonies and World War II battle sites. Access is limited; visitors usually travel as part of organised expeditions.
Ostrov Shumshu (Shumshu Island) is one of the northernmost islands in the Kuril chain, administratively part of Sakhalin Oblast in Russia. The island is volcanic and rugged, with a small population and remnants of military infrastructure.
Shumshu was the location of fighting between Soviet and Japanese forces during the final days of World War II in August 1945; several landings and battles took place there as Soviet forces seized the Kurils. The wartime events are among the island’s notable historical features and left traces in the landscape.
Today the island has limited civilian settlement and is sparsely populated, with much of the land remaining in a relatively natural state and accessible only with logistical planning. The island lies close to other northern Kuril islands and is part of the chain that separates the Sea of Okhotsk from the North Pacific.
Geographically Shumshu is at the northern end of the Kuril archipelago, northeast of the larger island of Paramushir and within the maritime region administered from Sakhalin Oblast.
- 1945 military history: Shumshu is one of the northern Kuril Islands and was the scene of combat between Soviet and Japanese forces during the Soviet invasion of the Kurils in August 1945.
