Osaka Castle
Castle Historic Japanese castle and symbol of Osaka
Osaka Castle crowns a park full of cherry trees and hosts a museum chronicling Japan’s unification. Visitors climb to the observation deck for city views, explore surrounding grounds and sample street food nearby.
Osaka Castle is a historic Japanese castle in central Osaka, originally built by the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi beginning in 1583. It became a centre of power during the late 16th century and later saw major battles and reconstructions in the Tokugawa era.
The castle complex includes a multi-storey main keep (tenshukaku) that was reconstructed in the 20th century and now houses a museum and an observation deck with city views. Surrounding the keep are extensive stone walls, moats and the Nishinomaru Garden, all set within Osaka Castle Park.
Significant events include the Siege of Osaka in the early 17th century, which resulted in the fall of the Toyotomi line and the castle’s destruction and later rebuilding under Tokugawa rule. Modern restoration work in the 20th century replaced earlier wooden structures with a reinforced concrete keep while conservation has preserved the park and stonework.
The castle is situated in central Osaka and is easily reached by several city train and subway lines; the park is a central recreational space for residents and tourists alike.
- Construction and reconstruction: The original castle was constructed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi beginning in 1583; the current main tower is a 20th-century reconstruction that functions as a museum and observation point.
- Cherry blossoms: The surrounding Osaka Castle Park is a major cherry blossom viewing site in spring and provides green space and walking paths in central Osaka.
What to See #
- Main keep (tenshukaku) and museum: The central multi-storey main keep (tenshukaku) houses a museum on the castle's history and provides panoramic views over Osaka from its observation floors.

- Stone walls and moats: Extensive stone walls, moats and gate structures that form the defensive complex surrounding the castle park, with visible masonry from the medieval and Edo periods.
