Main image

Osaka Aquarium Kaiyukan is a major public aquarium in Osaka’s harbour area, known for its large tanks and immersive displays representing Pacific Rim marine environments; it opened in 1990.

The exhibit design centers on a very large central Pacific Ocean tank viewed through multiple levels, surrounded by a ring of thematic tanks that interpret 15 or so distinct Pacific ecosystems. The site has been notable for exhibiting large pelagic species and for immersive walk-through circulation that brings visitors close to large displays.

Opened in 1990 as part of the Tempozan Harbour Village redevelopment, the aquarium was designed to showcase marine life from around the Pacific Rim and has hosted successive husbandry programs for large marine species.

The aquarium sits on Osaka Bay in the Tempozan area of Osaka, close to the port and other family-oriented attractions in the Minato Ward.

  • Location and visiting tips: The aquarium is located at Tempozan Harbor Village in Osaka's Minato Ward and is one of the world's larger public aquaria by total tank volume; check feeding and presentation schedules for timed displays.

What to See #

  • Pacific Ocean tank: The central Pacific Ocean tank is the aquarium's signature exhibit, designed as a deep viewing column representing an open-ocean habitat and historically displayed large pelagic species.
  • Themed habitat tanks: A sequence of tanks and habitats arranged around the central tank represents different Pacific Rim ecosystems from the Aleutian Islands to Antarctic waters.
