How to Get to Orvieto
Orvieto is very well served by rail - the Orvieto FS station sits below the hilltop old town and frequent regional and intercity trains link it to Rome, Florence and Perugia. Rome's airports are the main international gateways, with easy train connections via Rome Termini.
Perugia San Francesco d’Assisi - Umbria Airport (PEG): Perugia is the closest airport by distance (about 50-65 km), with onward road transfers by bus or car to Orvieto taking roughly 50-75 minutes. Shuttle buses and taxis operate between PEG and Perugia city; from Perugia you can continue by bus or train toward Orvieto.
Rome Fiumicino (FCO) / Ciampino (CIA): Rome’s airports offer the most international connections. From Fiumicino, take a train to Rome Termini then a regional or intercity train to Orvieto (see train paragraph); total travel time is commonly 1.5-2.5 hours depending on connections.
Train: Orvieto has a mainline station (Orvieto FS) on the Rome-Florence corridor. Regional and intercity trains connect Orvieto with Rome Termini in about 1-1.5 hours (regional trains are cheaper; Intercity/Freccia options are faster). Typical regional one-way fares are around €5-€12 depending on service; faster services cost more.
Bus: Local buses and coaches link Orvieto station with the historic hilltop town centre; the funicular from the station up to the historic centre is a short ride (small ticket fare) and taxis are available at the station for door-to-door transfers.
How to Get Around Orvieto #
Orvieto’s compact historic centre is best explored on foot - steep, cobbled streets and narrow alleys make walking the natural choice. The funicular connects Orvieto Scalo (railway) with the hilltop town, making rail arrivals convenient; local buses and limited taxis provide short hops around town. If you drive, park outside the medieval centre and walk in; comfortable shoes are strongly recommended for the uneven surfaces.
