Orlické Mountains
Mountains Mountain range offering hiking on Czech–Polish border
Forested range in northeastern Bohemia along the Czech-Polish border; popular for hiking, cross‑country skiing, traditional glassworks villages and panoramic ridgeline trails.
The Orlické Mountains are a mid-altitude mountain range in northeastern Bohemia (Hradec Králové Region) forming part of the Sudetes and known for forested ridges and hilltop summits.
Outdoor activities dominate: marked hiking trails along the ridgelines, cross-country skiing in winter and small downhill ski areas. The highest point, Velká Deštná, reaches 1,115 metres and is a focal point for panoramic views.
The range has long supported rural mountain communities and forestry; over the 19th and 20th centuries the area developed modest tourism infrastructure such as mountain huts and ski lifts.
The mountains lie along the Czech-Polish border region in the Hradec Králové administrative area, northeast of the city of Hradec Králové and accessible by regional roads and trails.
- Viewing and seasonal access: Best viewpoints are from the summit of Velká Deštná and from marked ridge trails; winter conditions can close higher routes, so check local trail and lift information.
What to See #
- Velká Deštná (highest peak): Velká Deštná is the range's highest peak at 1,115 metres and is a common trailhead for long hikes and winter sport activities.
- Mountain towns and resorts: Deštné v Orlických horách and other small mountain towns provide ski lifts, cross-country tracks and visitor services for the range.
How to Get to Orlické Mountains #
The Orlické Mountains (Orlické hory) are reached from eastern Bohemia by road or rail. From Prague drive east on the D11 motorway toward Hradec Králové and continue on I/11, then follow local roads toward Rychnov nad Kněžnou and the Orlické foothills (driving distance from Prague ≈150 km). By public transport take a Czech Rail (ČD) or RegioJet train from Prague to Ústí nad Orlicí or Rychnov nad Kněžnou (~1.5-2 hours), then local buses or taxis connect to trailheads and village trailheads (the final bus/taxi legs typically run 20-40 minutes depending on the chosen resort).
Tips for Visiting Orlické Mountains #
- Plan hikes for clear mornings on Velká Deštná (the range's highest peak) for the widest views from its observation point and to avoid weekend afternoon crowds.
- Start routes from Deštné v Orlických horách or nearby marked KČT trailheads - the region's red/blue-marked trails are well maintained and these trailheads give the most direct access to main summits.
- Visit in shoulder seasons (late spring or early autumn) to enjoy wildflowers or autumn colours with fewer visitors, and check local bus timetables to reach trailheads without a car.
Best Time to Visit Orlické Mountains #
Summer is best for hiking; winter is best if you plan to use the area's winter-sports facilities.
