Öræfajökull
Mountain Ice-cap volcano in southeast Iceland; glacier-covered summit
In southeast Iceland, Öræfajökull is a glacier‑covered stratovolcano whose summit area includes Hvannadalshnúkur, Iceland’s highest point; mountaineers and glacier guides use the area for alpine routes.
Öræfajökull is an ice-covered stratovolcano in southeast Iceland that forms the highest part of the Vatnajökull ice cap. It contains Iceland’s highest peak and has produced some of the country’s most powerful historical eruptions.
The volcano produced a major explosive eruption in 1362 that deposited ash across large parts of Iceland and caused extensive local devastation, which is reflected in the region’s name. Subsequent smaller eruptions have occurred, and modern monitoring focuses on seismicity and ice-volcano interactions beneath the Vatnajökull ice cap.
Situated in southeast Iceland within Vatnajökull National Park, Öræfajökull lies between the coastal lowlands and the high ice cap; the nearest settled visitor base is the Skaftafell area and the town of Höfn is the closest larger settlement to the east.
- Summit elevation: Contains Iceland's highest point at 2,110 metres, which is a glaciated summit requiring mountaineering skills and appropriate equipment to reach safely.
- Historic eruption: Recorded a major explosive eruption in 1362 that reshaped the local landscape and gave the surrounding district the name Öræfi, meaning 'wasteland'.
What to See #
- Hvannadalshnúkur: A glaciated summit ridge that includes Iceland's highest point at 2,110 metres, forming the highest accessible peak on the island.
- Caldera and summit area: The volcano's central caldera and ice-covered summit area form the highest part of the Vatnajökull ice cap in southeast Iceland and are monitored for seismic and geothermal activity.
How to Get to Öræfajökull #
Drive east on Iceland’s Ring Road (Route 1) to the Vatnajökull / Skaftafell area and use the Skaftafell visitor centre as the usual staging point for trips to Öræfajökull (the volcano that contains Hvannadalshnúkur). From Reykjavík this is roughly a 330 km drive (about 4-5 hours); from the town of Höfn it is a shorter drive to the east (on the order of 80 km, around 1 hour). From Skaftafell follow marked park trails or join a guided glacier/volcano tour - glacier travel and summit attempts require experienced guides and specialist equipment.
Tips for Visiting Öræfajökull #
- Visit in the summer months and early morning when weather is most stable and daylight is long; winter access is often hazardous because routes cross glacier and crevasse zones.
- Treat any ascent or close approach as glacier/mountain travel - use a licensed glacier guide operating from Vatnajökull National Park/Skaftafell or Höfn and book guided trips well in advance.
- Most visitors only view outlet ice tongues from Road 1; to see more of the Öræfajökull massif itself, consult park rangers at Skaftafell for recommended viewpoints and safe vantage spots away from the main road.
Best Time to Visit Öræfajökull #
Best visited in summer (June-August) when access is easiest and weather is mildest.
