Orchid Island (Lanyu) is a small volcanic island off Taiwan’s southeast coast and the traditional homeland of the indigenous Tao (Yami) people. The island is noted for its distinctive culture, coastal cliffs, and marine biodiversity.
Visitors find a compact island environment with coastal hikes, snorkeling and diving along coral reefs, and opportunities to observe traditional Tao boats and village life. Outdoor activities are the primary draw rather than large built attractions.
The island has long been inhabited by the Tao people; their material culture and boat-building techniques remain visible in village layouts and ceremonies. Contact with outside authorities and modernization in the 20th century brought new transport links, tourism, and administrative integration with Taitung County.
Geographically it sits off Taiwan’s southeastern shore in the Philippine Sea and is administered as part of Taitung County. The island’s landscape is volcanic with steep coastlines and small villages clustered near sheltered bays.
- Access: Administratively part of Taitung County and reachable by regular ferries and flights from Taiwan's east coast.
- Culture: Home to the indigenous Tao (Yami) people, who maintain distinct fishing, boat-building and cultural traditions.
