Orbelian's Caravanserai

Orbelian’s Caravanserai is a medieval roadside inn in Vayots Dzor Province, Armenia, constructed in 1332 by the Orbelian princely family. It served as a staffed stopping point on regional trade and travel routes.

The caravanserai is a single complex of stone-built rooms arranged around a vaulted central space with ancillary lodging cells. The building illustrates 14th-century caravan architecture and is visited for its preserved masonry and straightforward layout.

Commissioned by the Orbelian family in 1332, the structure functioned as a rest stop and shelter for merchants and travelers on the local trade routes. Over subsequent centuries it fell out of regular use and now stands as a preserved medieval roadside monument.

Located in Vayots Dzor Province in southern Armenia, the caravanserai sits on the historic routes that cross the region and is reached from the regional road network serving local villages.
