Orava Castle

Orava Castle is a hilltop medieval castle in northern Slovakia, located above the Orava River near the village of Oravský Podzámok. It is one of Slovakia’s best-preserved castles and stands on a basalt rock prominence overlooking the valley.

The complex combines medieval defensive structures with later Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque modifications resulting from successive rebuildings and additions between the 13th and 17th centuries. The castle now functions as a museum with furnished rooms, historical exhibits and a visitor route through the main courtyards and halls.

Historically the site originated as a stone stronghold in the 13th century on earlier fortifications; ownership and architecture evolved over centuries as noble families expanded and rebuilt the complex. In the 20th century the castle became a managed museum and cultural site and has been conserved for tourism and study.

Geographically it sits in the Žilina Region of northern Slovakia above the Orava reservoir and is accessible by road from nearby towns and regional centres.

• Middle and Lower Castle: Middle and Lower Castle compounds containing residential wings, later Renaissance and Baroque additions, and museum exhibition rooms presenting regional history and medieval life.
• Chapel and courtyard: Castle chapel and courtyard that retain period architectural features and form part of the visitor route through the complex.

• Arrive early in the day to avoid tour buses that concentrate later in the morning; early arrival also gives better light for photographing the castle on its rocky spur.
• Check the castle's seasonal opening hours on its official site before you go-hours and available tours change between high season and winter.
• Climb to the highest viewing terraces for the best panoramas of the Orava valley and river; the upper circuit is usually quieter than the main courtyard during busy periods.
