Open-Air Museum of Lithuania

The Open-Air Museum of Lithuania (Rumšiškės) is a large outdoor ethnographic museum near Kaunas that recreates traditional rural environments from across Lithuania. The site presents reconstructed farmsteads, village streets, manor houses and rural workshops across extensive parkland.

Visitors walk between dispersed exhibits that represent the five major ethnographic regions of Lithuania, seeing vernacular buildings and demonstrations of traditional crafts and farming. The museum is organised as outdoor sectors, each focused on a regional vernacular type.

The museum was established in the 20th century to collect and preserve traditional rural buildings and ways of life that were disappearing in situ, and it has grown into one of the country’s largest open-air museums.

Located near Rumšiškės and within the Kaunas district, the museum is accessible by road from Kaunas and occupies a large area of park and forest outside the urban centre.
