Op Luang National Park
Park Thai national park featuring canyon and waterfalls
Northern Thailand park centered on a steep limestone gorge, Op Luang features waterfalls, forest trails and archaeological caves; hikers and day-trippers come from Chiang Mai for canyon views and local flora.
Op Luang National Park is a protected area in northern Thailand known for a deep river-carved gorge, waterfalls and archaeological cave sites. The park preserves steep-sided rock formations and river scenery rather than developed tourist facilities.
The primary highlight is the Op Luang Canyon, a narrow gorge carved by the Mae Chaem or Mae Wang river with cliffs that reach tens of meters in height, plus riverside trails and viewpoints. The park also contains waterfalls and caves with prehistoric archaeological finds.
Archaeological surveys in the area have recorded prehistoric artefacts and rock paintings in caves and rock shelters, indicating long-term human use of parts of the canyon and surrounding landscape. The site has been managed for conservation and low-intensity tourism.
The park is located in northern Thailand’s mountainous region, within Chiang Mai Province, southwest of the city of Chiang Mai. It is reached by road from nearby district centers and sits in a forested river valley landscape.
- Viewing tip: Best views of the main gorge are often reached via short trails from the park entrance, and the canyon is most photogenic in late dry season when river levels are lower.
