Oodaaq

Island Tiny uninhabited gravel islet near northern Greenland

Oodaaq is a reported gravel bank north of Greenland, noted in polar cartography as one of the most northerly pieces of land; visitation is limited to specialized Arctic expeditions.

Oodaaq is a tiny, uninhabited gravel and sand bank located north of Greenland in the high Arctic, sometimes described as the northernmost patch of emergent land. It is not a stable island and its size and shape change depending on sea-ice and storm conditions.

Because it consists of unconsolidated material, Oodaaq can appear and disappear or be reclassified as temporary sea ice or sediment accumulation rather than permanent land. It has been referenced in discussions about the northernmost points of land but is distinct from more permanent nearby islands.

The feature lies in the Lincoln Sea off northern Greenland at very high latitude, roughly several hundred kilometres from the North Pole and north of Greenland’s coastal headlands.

  • Ephemeral nature: Often cited as one of the northernmost pieces of emergent land, but its form is ephemeral and can change with shifting sea ice and sediment.
