Onekotan
Island Remote Kuril island with volcanic caldera lake
Onekotan, an uninhabited Kuril island in Sakhalin Oblast, features volcanic cones and a central caldera lake. Expeditions and scientists visit for volcanology, seabirds and rugged, rarely-trodden terrain.
Onekotan is an uninhabited volcanic island in the northern Kuril Islands chain administered by Russia. The island is dominated by volcanic topography, including at least one prominent stratovolcano and a large central crater lake.
The island’s landscape is marked by steep volcano cones, a central caldera and rugged coasts characteristic of Kuril volcanism. There are no permanent settlements and the terrain and weather make access difficult outside well-planned expeditions.
Volcanic activity and eruptions have shaped the island’s geology; it has been mapped and studied by Russian and Japanese surveys over the 19th and 20th centuries. Its volcanic peaks have been the primary focus of scientific interest.
Onekotan lies in the northern Kurils between the Sea of Okhotsk and the Pacific Ocean, east of the island of Iturup and north of Paramushir. The nearest regional administrative centre is on Sakhalin Island to the west; the island is remote and exposed to North Pacific weather systems.
- Access: Uninhabited and volcanic, the island is of interest mainly to volcanologists and experienced expedition cruises.
Tips for Visiting Onekotan #
- Onekotan is remote, uninhabited and part of the Kuril island chain-access requires a private vessel or expedition and typically only in summer when seas are calmer (June-August).
- Expect no visitor infrastructure: plan permits, landing permissions and safety with an experienced operator in advance; the island's volcanic caldera and crater lakes are the primary sights, and visits should be organized with guides familiar with local landing sites.
- Because there are no facilities or rescue services, prioritize operators who include navigation through the Kurils and have contingency plans-this is a destination for well‑prepared expedition groups rather than independent day trips.
Best Time to Visit Onekotan #
The brief summer (July-August) is the best time for visits-milder weather and better chances of successful sea access.
