Olympus (Lycia)
Archaeological Site Ancient Lycian city and seaside ruins near Antalya
Olympus (Lycia) presents seaside Lycian ruins, rock-cut tombs and Roman/Byzantine remains along Turkey’s Antalya coast; visitors explore archaeological ruins, coastal trails and nearby beaches.
Olympus (Lycia) is the site of the ancient Lycian city of Olympos and the nearby mountain traditionally called Olympos, located on the Mediterranean coast of Antalya Province in southwestern Turkey. The archaeological remains and adjacent natural area are a noted example of Lycian coastal settlement.
The site includes coastal ruins of residential and public structures, visible necropoleis with rock-cut tombs and a beach used for recreation; visitors also access the nearby mountain area where the summit known as Tahtalı rises to about 2,365 metres, reached by a cable car. The combined coastal ruins, woodland and shoreline offer both short walks and longer hikes in a protected setting.
Olympos was occupied in the Lycian, Hellenistic and Roman periods and contains structures and inscriptions from those eras; over time the settlement declined and the ruins became integrated into local fishing and coastal activities before being recognised as an archaeological area. The modern conservation of the site places the ruins within a broader national-park framework.
The ruins and mountain lie near the modern village of Çıralı on the Lycian coast, southwest of the city of Antalya. The area sits between the Mediterranean shoreline and the forested slopes that ascend toward the Tahtalı massif.
- Olympos National Park: Part of a wider protected area that combines coastal ruins, pine-covered slopes and a long Mediterranean beach, making it both archaeological and natural reserve.
- Tahtalı summit: The nearby Tahtalı summit reaches roughly 2,365 m and is served by a cable car offering panoramic views of the coast and islands.
What to See #
- Ancient city of Olympos: Coastal archaeological complex with visible ruins of houses, baths, a theatre and multiple Lycian-era rock-cut tombs located close to the Mediterranean shoreline; the site sits within a protected coastal-national-park setting with beach access.
- Tahtalı (Mount Olympos): Mountain summit commonly called Tahtalı or Mount Olympos with an elevation of about 2,365 metres and a commercial cable car that carries visitors from near sea level to the summit area.
How to Get to Olympus (Lycia) #
Olympus of Lycia (the ancient Olympos/Tahtalı area) is on the Antalya Province coast near the villages of Çıralı and Olympos. From the city of Antalya drive southwest along the coastal D400 highway toward Kemer/Kumluca (the coastal road is the main approach) and then follow local signs to Çıralı/Olympos; the drive from Antalya is on the order of an hour to an hour‑and‑a‑half depending on traffic.
Regular intercity buses/coaches run from Antalya to towns on the Kemer/Kumluca corridor; from the nearest bus stop or parking area the ancient site and coastal trails at Olympos/Çıralı are reached on foot within a few minutes.
Tips for Visiting Olympus (Lycia) #
- Visit Olympus (Lycia) early morning or late afternoon to avoid the summer heat and the busiest tour-operator crowds that concentrate around the beach ruins at midday.
- Approach the site from the Olympos/Çıralı village side rather than only the beach strip-this gives easier access to the archaeological area and quieter viewpoints that many day-trippers miss, and lets you combine the ruins with nearby attractions such as the Yanartaş (Chimera) flames in the evening.
Best Time to Visit Olympus (Lycia) #
Best visited in spring (Apr-Jun) or autumn (Sep-Nov) for comfortable hiking weather and fewer extremes of summer heat or winter snow at higher elevations.
