Olumo Rock

Olumo Rock is a prominent granite outcrop in Abeokuta, Ogun State, Nigeria that served as a natural fortress and refuge for the Egba people during 19th century inter-communal conflicts. It is a major cultural landmark and visitor attraction in the city.

Visitors can climb carved stairways or use an elevator partway to reach viewpoints and terraces on the rock; the site includes caves, small shrine spaces and a visitor area with displays. The summit provides panoramic views over Abeokuta and the surrounding plains.

Local oral histories and records describe the rock’s use as a defensive refuge and rallying point for the Egba in the 19th century, and the feature has long-standing cultural and symbolic importance for the community. Over time the site has been adapted with access infrastructure and museum interpretation for visitors.

Olumo Rock rises within the urban area of Abeokuta, in Ogun State, roughly 80-100 kilometres northwest of Lagos and visible across the surrounding city.
