Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant
Island Finnish nuclear power plant site including the Olkiluoto EPR
On the island of Olkiluoto in Satakunta, the Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant hosts multiple reactor units, including the recent EPR project. Sightseeing is limited; engineers, students and industry visitors come to view modern nuclear technology and coastal industrial landscape.
The Olkiluoto Nuclear Power Plant is a multi-reactor power station on Olkiluoto island in Eurajoki, on Finland’s west coast. It is a principal site for Finland’s nuclear electricity generation and also the location of the country’s long-term spent-fuel disposal project.
The site hosts several reactor units of different designs, including two older boiling-water reactors and a later-generation pressurised-reactor unit. In parallel with power generation, the Onkalo deep geological repository has been developed at the site for the underground disposal of spent nuclear fuel.
Olkiluoto is sited on a rocky island in the Bothnian Sea region and is accessed from the mainland by road; the surrounding landscape is coastal and industrial in character, with the plant prominent on the island’s shoreline.
- Power generation and fuel disposal: The site combines electricity generation with Finland's national spent-fuel disposal project; Onkalo is one of the first deep geological repositories developed for commercial spent nuclear fuel.
What to See #
- Onkalo repository: The Onkalo deep geological repository site located on the island, developed for the long-term disposal of spent nuclear fuel and featuring underground tunnels and engineered barriers.
- Reactor units: The operating reactor complex on the island comprises older boiling-water reactors alongside a newer generation reactor unit that was added to increase site capacity.
