Olkhon Island is the largest island in Lake Baikal, situated in Russia’s Irkutsk Oblast. It is the lake’s biggest island, roughly 72 kilometres long with an area of around 730 square kilometres, and contains a mix of cliffs, steppe and forested terrain.
The island is a cultural and natural attraction with a small number of settlements including the main village of Khuzhir, fishing bays, and prominent geological features such as the Shaman Rock on the southern shore. Visitors come for rugged scenery, boat trips, hiking and to learn about Buryat cultural traditions associated with the island.
Olkhon has long been an important site in local shamanic practice and remains culturally significant to the Buryat people; parts of the island are protected and visitors are expected to respect sacred sites.
Geographically it lies within central Lake Baikal off the western coast of the lake and is accessed by ferry from the mainland in the warmer months, forming a major island destination in the Lake Baikal region.
- Access seasons: The island is reached by ferry in summer and by ice road or vehicle in winter from the mainland; travel requires planning for seasonal services.
- Cultural sensitivity: Local Buryat shamanic sites on the island are culturally sensitive; visitors should observe local guidelines and avoid disturbing sacred places.
What to See #
- Khuzhir village: The main village and administrative centre on the island, a base for visitor accommodation, local shops and a ferry landing.
- Shaman Rock (Burkhan) or Cape Burkhan: A sacred rock formation on the island's southern shore, one of Lake Baikal's most famous shamanic sites with cliffs and cultural markings.
- Cape Khoboy: The northern cape with steep cliffs and panoramic views over Lake Baikal, popular with hikers and photographers.
How to Get to Olkhon Island #
From Irkutsk (the regional hub), travel by road to Sakhyurta (about 260 km northeast) and take the seasonal ferry to Olkhon (Khuzhir). In winter, a winter road is sometimes marked across the frozen lake from Üst-Orda/Khuzhir; only travel with experienced drivers and confirmed local guidance.
Tips for Visiting Olkhon Island #
- On Olkhon, use local guides for hikes inland - trails cross sacred sites and changing permafrost; a guide also eases navigation when lakeshore ice is unstable.
- Bring cash: many guesthouses and rural cafes do not accept cards.
- Respect local Buryat and shamanic sites, especially Cape Burkhan (Shamanka); avoid climbing cairns or moving prayer ribbons (khadaks).
