Old Strathcona

Old Strathcona is a historic neighbourhood and commercial district on the south side of Edmonton, Alberta, known for its preserved early 20th-century streetscapes and active arts and retail scene. The area centers on Whyte Avenue (82 Avenue) and contains numerous heritage buildings and cultural venues.

Key attractions include a lively pedestrian-oriented stretch of shops and restaurants on Whyte Avenue, a long-running weekend farmers’ market, several small theatres and galleries, and street-level heritage architecture. The district hosts festivals and regular cultural events that draw residents and visitors from across the city.

Originally settled and developed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the area was incorporated as the separate City of Strathcona before municipal amalgamation with Edmonton in 1912. Many commercial and civic buildings from that growth period survive and have been repurposed for modern uses.

Geographically the district lies just south of the North Saskatchewan River and the University of Alberta’s south campus, within Edmonton’s inner urban area and a short drive or transit trip from downtown Edmonton.
