Old Orhei

Old Orhei (Orheiul Vechi) is an archaeological and historical complex in central Moldova featuring a medieval cave monastery, fortified settlement remains and a traditional village set within a steep limestone river valley. The site preserves multiple layers of human occupation from prehistoric times through the medieval Moldavian period.

Key features include a rupestrian Orthodox monastery carved into the cliff face, the visible remains of a fortified town on a hilltop spur and the adjacent village of Butuceni which offers visitor services and viewpoints. The landscape includes terraces, caves and archaeological deposits that attract historians, archaeologists and cultural tourists.

The complex lies on a pronounced bend of the Răut River about 60 kilometres northeast of Chișinău and is accessible by road from the capital and nearby district towns.
