How to Get to Old Montreal #
Old Montreal sits in Montreal’s city centre along the Old Port, so it’s very easy to reach. Take the Montreal Metro (Orange line) to Place‑d’Armes or Champ‑de‑Mars stations; both are about a 5-15 minute walk into the heart of Old Montreal.
If driving, follow Rue de la Commune or Rue Saint‑Paul into the Old Port/Old Montreal area where several paid parking lots and street parking are available.
Tips for Visiting Old Montreal #
- Walk Old Montreal first thing in the morning on a weekday for the best photos of the cobblestones and to avoid cruise and tour‑bus crowds that arrive later in the day.
- Start at a landmark (Place Jacques‑Cartier or Bonsecours Market) and then deliberately detour onto the narrow side streets off Rue St‑Paul - those quieter galleries, courtyards and stairways are where most visitors don't venture.
- Avoid the busiest stretches near Notre‑Dame and the main waterfront by exploring inland historic blocks and the Old Port farther south, where you'll find calmer cafes and local shops.
