Old Havana and its Fortification System
Historical Site Historic core of Havana with colonial fortifications
Old Havana’s fortification system includes colonial walls, Castillo de los Tres Reyes del Morro and other Spanish-era batteries; travelers come for 16th-19th-century architecture, plazas, museums, live music and a dense urban fabric of narrow streets and classic cars.
Old Havana and its Fortification System is the historic core of Cuba’s capital, Havana, featuring a dense ensemble of colonial architecture, plazas and coastal fortifications. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site recognised for its urban layout and military works dating from the 16th to 19th centuries.
The area contains a succession of public squares, narrow streets and churches, alongside major fortresses that guard the harbour entrance such as Morro Castle and La Cabaña. Colonial buildings with baroque and neoclassical facades, restored mansions, museums and museums-in-restoration provide cultural and architectural attractions concentrated in a walkable district.
Founded by the Spanish in the 16th century, Havana developed as a major colonial port and naval base. Successive fortifications were constructed between the 16th and 18th centuries to protect the harbour, and the historic core evolved into a densely built urban quarter reflecting colonial and Republican-era growth.
The site occupies the central historic district of Havana on Cuba’s north coast, directly adjacent to Havana Harbour and the modern city. It is contiguous with the broader city rather than being distant from a major urban centre.
- UNESCO World Heritage Site: Inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its outstanding collection of colonial-era urban fabric, fortifications and role as a strategic Caribbean port.
- Visitor note: Best explored on foot; many major monuments are located within a compact area but restoration work continues in parts of the historic core, which can affect access to some interiors.
