Öland
Island Swedish Baltic island with UNESCO-listed Stora Alvaret
Off Sweden’s southeast coast, Öland offers the limestone Stora Alvaret plain, rows of wooden windmills, Borgholm Castle ruins, sandy beaches and long cycling routes across flat farmland.
Öland is a long, narrow Swedish island in the Baltic Sea off the province of Småland, administratively part of Kalmar County. It is Sweden’s second-largest island and is known for its distinctive limestone geography and cultural landscapes.
The island attracts visitors for its expansive coastal beaches, windmills, historic sites and the extensive Stora Alvaret limestone plain in the south. Outdoor activities include cycling along coastal roads, birdwatching at southern reserves and visiting the island’s historic towns and castle ruins. Seasonal tourism peaks in summer when ferry and bridge traffic and resort services are most active.
Settlements and farming have shaped Öland for centuries; archaeological remains span prehistoric stone settings through medieval and early modern period structures. The southern part of the island was designated a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape because of its long-established agricultural patterns and distinctive natural habitat.
Öland lies off Sweden’s southeastern coast, separated from the city of Kalmar by a narrow strait and connected to the mainland by the Öland Bridge. The island’s shoreline includes long sandy beaches and rocky stretches facing the Baltic Sea.
- Size and access: Sweden's second-largest island, connected to the mainland by a roughly six-kilometre bridge that opened in 1972, making car travel straightforward.
- World Heritage: The southern landscape is recognised for its archaeological sites and traditional agriculture and is protected as the 'Agricultural Landscape of Southern Öland' UNESCO World Heritage area.
What to See #
- Stora Alvaret: A large limestone plain in the island's southern part that supports a unique alvar grassland habitat and forms the core of a UNESCO World Heritage cultural landscape.
- Borgholm Castle ruins: Ruins of a prominent coastal castle on the island's west side that date mainly from the medieval and early modern periods and are a common visitor sight.
- Öland Bridge: The road crossing to the mainland via a fixed link opened in the 20th century and spans roughly six kilometres, providing the main vehicle access for most visitors.
How to Get to Öland #
Öland is reached from the mainland by the Öland Bridge (Ölandsbron) from Kalmar - the bridge carries road E22 and is about 6 km long. Drive from Kalmar across the Ölandsbron to reach the southern part of the island; regional buses from Kalmar (Kalmar Länstrafik) also serve Öland’s towns across the bridge, with short walks from the island’s bus stops into town centres.
Tips for Visiting Öland #
- The Öland Bridge (Ölandsbron) from Kalmar is the island's main vehicle access-use it early or late in the day to avoid peak-season bridge traffic and queues at ferry terminals.
- If you want quieter experiences, visit outside July (late spring or early autumn) and head to the southern tip (Ottenby) and the Stora Alvaret plain early in the morning to avoid the day-tripper crowds and see migrating birds.
Best Time to Visit Öland #
Visit Öland in summer for the best weather and outdoor activities, or in shoulder seasons for fewer crowds and pleasant conditions.
