Oki Islands

The Oki Islands are an archipelago in the Sea of Japan belonging to Shimane Prefecture, consisting of a larger main island and several smaller islands grouped geographically. The group is split into Dōgo (the large island) and the Dōzen island cluster and is known for coastal cliffs, tidal beaches and rural island communities.

Visitors use ferries and local boats to reach the inhabited islands, where activities focus on coastal walks, boat tours, sea kayaking and local seafood. Several islands have fishing ports, small museums and protected natural areas that attract boaters and nature-oriented visitors.

Historically the islands were used as a place of imperial exile in past centuries, and they retain cultural traditions distinct from the mainland. The archipelago sits off the Shimane coast in the northern reaches of the Seto Inland Sea / Sea of Japan maritime zone and is part of the prefectural island network.
