The Okanagan is a south-central British Columbia valley region in Canada centred on Okanagan Lake and the urban corridor that runs along its shores. It is characterised by a relatively dry, continental climate that supports orchards, vineyards and year-round recreation.

The area is known for its wineries and fruit production, with dozens of commercial vineyards and cellar doors spread across the valley, and for outdoor activities including boating, beach recreation, hiking and winter sports in nearby highlands.

The valley developed from indigenous Syilx/Okanagan homelands into a region of agriculture and tourism during the 19th and 20th centuries; today it combines urban centres, rural farmland and protected natural areas.

Geographically the Okanagan stretches roughly along the lake corridor from the northern communities through central hubs such as Kelowna to the southern towns of Penticton and Osoyoos, within the interior of British Columbia east of the coastal mountains.

  • Agriculture and wine tourism: The region is a major fruit-growing and wine-producing area with numerous vineyards and orchards, and peak visitor activity occurs in summer and at harvest in late summer to early autumn.
  • Central lake: Okanagan Lake is the valley's central water body and supports boating, beaches and waterfront communities along its shoreline.

What to See #

  • Kelowna: The city of Kelowna, the Okanagan's largest urban centre and a focal point for wineries, services and lake access.
  • Penticton: Penticton, a southern Okanagan town known for beaches and as a gateway to nearby vineyards and outdoor activities.
  • Osoyoos: Osoyoos at the southern end of the valley, notable for its hot, nearly desert-like climate and nearby vineyards and beaches.
  • Okanagan Lake: Okanagan Lake, the large glacial lake that runs through the valley and is used for boating, swimming and lakeside recreation.
