Ojców National Park
Park Small Polish park with limestone cliffs and caves
Poland’s Ojców National Park, close to Kraków, compresses karst cliffs, caves and small castles like Ojców and Pieskowa Skała. Visitors come for short hikes, cave tours and accessible castle ruins.
Ojców National Park is the smallest national park in Poland, protecting a compact karst landscape of limestone cliffs, caves and cultural monuments in southern Poland; it was established in 1956 and covers roughly 21 square kilometres. The park conserves both natural and historical features in a scenic river valley.
Short walks and marked trails lead to viewpoints, cave entrances and historic sites including the Renaissance Pieskowa Skała Castle and the ruins of Ojców Castle. The park’s most famous natural landmark is the limestone pillar known as Maczuga Herkulesa or Hercules’ Club, a prominent outcrop roughly 20-30 metres high.
Caves, rock shelters and karst formations are interspersed with woodlands and the Prądnik River valley; the area is well suited to day visits and educational trails that explain geology and local history.
The site has long-held cultural significance with medieval fortifications and a string of castles built and rebuilt from the medieval period onward, many forming part of the historic Trail of the Eagles’ Nests. The national park was created in 1956 to protect the area’s karst features, caves and historic monuments.
The park lies in southern Poland within easy reach of Kraków, located roughly 20-25 kilometres north of the city, set in a short limestone valley that opens toward the Polish Jura Chain.
