Ogijima
Island Small island in Seto Inland Sea with art installations
A tiny island in the Seto Inland Sea, Ogijima draws visitors for narrow lanes, a working fishing village, a coastal lighthouse and short island walks.
Ogijima is a small inhabited island in the Seto Inland Sea off the coast of Kagawa Prefecture, Japan, known for its traditional fishing village and compact, hilly layout.
A network of narrow lanes, stone steps and a small port form the island’s main public spaces, with viewpoints offering open water views across the Seto Inland Sea and neighbouring islets. The island is quiet and suitable for short walks of a few hours rather than long hikes.
Ogijima developed as a local fishing and maritime community and retains a low-density built environment of wooden houses and small harbours; in recent decades it has drawn interest from day-trippers and visitors seeking rural island life.
The island lies in the Inland Sea about 10 kilometres north of Takamatsu on the island of Shikoku and is reached by a short ferry ride from Takamatsu’s port.
- Access: Regular passenger ferries connect the island with the port of Takamatsu; services are small-boat scale so check schedules in advance, especially outside summer.
- Getting around: The island is compact and best explored on foot by following paved paths and stone steps to the hilltop for coastal views across the Seto Inland Sea.
