Oeschinen Lake
Lake Scenic alpine lake with steep limestone cliffs, popular hiking
Alpine lake above Kandersteg accessed by gondola and mountain trails. Summer visitors hike, row on the water and use it as a base for high‑alpine routes; winter brings frozen scenery and sledging.
Oeschinen Lake (Oeschinensee) is an alpine lake above the village of Kandersteg in the Bernese Oberland of Switzerland. The lake sits in a glacial cirque and is known for clear turquoise water set against steep mountain walls.
Visitors come for hiking, boating in summer and panoramic mountain views of peaks such as the Blüemlisalp. A cable car from Kandersteg plus a short walk brings most visitors to the lakeside and numerous trails radiate from the basin.
The lake lies at an alpine elevation of around 1,578 metres above sea level and is a popular day-trip destination from the Bernese Plateau. It is surrounded by marked mountain trails and alpine pastures used for grazing in summer.
Geographically Oeschinen Lake is set in the canton of Bern, roughly above the village of Kandersteg in a steep valley of the Bernese Alps; the nearest rail and road access point is Kandersteg village.
- Access: A cable car from Kandersteg provides the quickest access, followed by a short walk to the lakeshore; the area is a launch point for multi-day alpine hikes and via ferrata routes.
- Seasonal conditions: Sits at high altitude and typically remains cool into summer; the lake freezes in winter and ice can persist into late spring at higher elevations.
How to Get to Oeschinen Lake #
Take the train to Kandersteg (served by SBB/BLS regional and intercity services). From Kandersteg station follow signs to the Oeschinen cable car (Oeschinenbahn) in the valley; the cable car ride up is short (about 10-15 minutes) and from the upper cable‑car station it’s a 30-40 minute walk downhill on marked trails to Oeschinen Lake.
By road Kandersteg is the access point for the lake (Kandersteg is reachable by car from Bern in roughly one to one and a half hours, depending on route and traffic).
Tips for Visiting Oeschinen Lake #
- Take the Kandersteg gondola up to Oeschinenalp and aim for first or early runs in summer for mirror‑calm water and far fewer day‑visitors than mid‑day.
- If you prefer hiking, start from the gondola station rather than hiking the full valley approach-this saves time and leaves more of the day for the lake and boat rental queues.
- Avoid weekend afternoons in high season (July-August) when the lakeside and boat hire get busiest; midweek visits give a noticeably quieter experience.
Best Time to Visit Oeschinen Lake #
The best time to visit Oeschinen Lake for hiking and boating is summer (June-September) when trails and services are fully available.
