Odeon of Agrippa
Archaeological Site Ancient Roman odeon near Athens' Acropolis
A Roman-era odeon near Athens’ ancient center preserves semicircular seating and stage remains; visitors combine a stop here with the Acropolis, Agora and the Plaka neighbourhood.
The Odeon of Agrippa is a Roman-era concert hall in central Athens, originally built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa around the end of the 1st century BCE as a covered performance venue. It once accommodated musical performances and public gatherings in the Roman city.
Remains include the building’s foundations and parts of the stage area; the Odeon formed part of the Roman Agora complex and functioned alongside other public buildings. Archaeological traces show the footprint of a roofed hall used for performances rather than the open-air theatres of earlier Greece.
The structure was commissioned by Agrippa in the late 1st century BCE and later altered in the Roman and early Byzantine periods; over time it fell into ruin and much of its superstructure was lost, leaving the archaeological remains visible today. The site is interpreted within the wider context of Rome’s urban contributions to Athens.
The Odeon lies in central Athens adjacent to the Roman Agora, within walking distance of Monastiraki and the Acropolis, and is part of the city’s main archaeological area.
- Location tip: The Odeon sits beside the Roman Agora and is within easy walking distance of Monastiraki and the Acropolis, making it accessible on the central Athens archaeological circuit.
