Odenwald

The Odenwald is a low mountain range in southwestern Germany spanning parts of Hesse, Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, known for forested hills, sandstone outcrops and historic market towns.

Key attractions include wooded hiking trails, rock formations and medieval towns with timber-framed architecture; the landscape is dissected by river valleys and dotted with castles and ruins. Elevations are modest, the highest point being the Katzenbuckel at about 626 metres, which offers panoramic views.

The region has a history stretching from Celtic and Roman activity through the medieval period, when numerous castles and fortified towns were established; many castles now survive as ruins or restored sites. Traditional crafts and regional museums preserve local cultural history.

The Odenwald sits roughly between the Rhine and Main rivers, southeast of Frankfurt and north of Heidelberg, forming a transitional landscape between lowland river basins and higher uplands.

What to See #

• Katzenbuckel (highest point): Katzenbuckel is the Odenwald's highest point at about 626 metres and is marked by an extinct volcanic cone with a lookout tower that provides wide views over the surrounding hills.
• Felsenmeer: The Felsenmeer near Lautertal is a large boulder field and popular hiking area formed from weathered sandstone blocks extending across the slope and valley.
• Michelstadt and Erbach: Historic towns such as Michelstadt and Erbach contain medieval town centres, timber-framed houses and regional museums that reflect the Odenwald's cultural landscape.
