Odaesan National Park is a protected area in Gangwon Province in eastern South Korea centered on the Odae mountain massif. The park was designated as a national park in 1975 and conserves forested ridges, peaks and a historic temple complex.

Hikers use a network of well-marked trails that access ridgelines, valley tracks and the park’s main summit areas; the park includes peaks rising above 1,500 metres. The temple complex of Woljeongsa is a major cultural attraction within the park and provides a focal point for visitors combined with forest scenery and seasonal landscapes.

The area has long been associated with Korean Buddhist practice; Woljeongsa dates to the early medieval period and has been an active temple site for many centuries. The national park designation in the 20th century formalized protection for the mountain forests and cultural sites.

Odaesan sits within the Taebaek Mountain range in Gangwon Province in eastern South Korea, forming part of a series of forested mountains that run along the peninsula’s eastern side. The park is inland from the east coast and accessible from regional towns in Gangwon.

  • Protected status: Designated a national park in 1975 and managed for both conservation and public recreation.
  • Autumn foliage: Autumn months produce notable fall foliage on the park's higher slopes, commonly visited in October.

What to See #

  • Woljeongsa Temple: A major Buddhist temple complex established on the mountain, with wooden halls and a long history of monastic practice.
  • Birobong Peak: The park's principal summit known as Birobong rising to about 1,563 metres and forming a frequent objective for hikers.
  • Trail network: Extensive trail network across mixed conifer and fir forest linking temples, ridgelines and valley routes suitable for day hikes and multi-day walks.

Tips for Visiting Odaesan National Park #

  • Odaesan is particularly striking in autumn for fall foliage and in late spring for forest blossoms-plan weekday or early-morning visits to avoid weekend crowds at the main temple areas.
  • Use the Woljeongsa temple entrance as your starting point for many of the park's popular trails; the temple complex is the park's main hub for maps, information and marked routes.
  • Start hikes early to beat the common afternoon rain and to have quieter trails; check park or temple noticeboards for seasonal trail closures or guidance.
