Park Baroque palace gardens surrounding Munich's Nymphenburg Palace
Baroque garden complex around Munich’s Nymphenburg Palace, laid out with canals, avenues and sculptures; visitors stroll paths, visit palace rooms and nearby museums.
Nymphenburg Palace Park is the landscaped grounds surrounding the Baroque Nymphenburg Palace in Munich’s Neuhausen-Nymphenburg district. The palace construction began in 1664 as a summer residence for the Bavarian electors, and the park combines a formal Baroque parterre near the palace with extended English-style landscape gardens and water features.
Key features within the park include the central palace building, the rococo hunting lodge Amalienburg (built in the 1730s), long tree-lined avenues, canals and ponds used for leisure walks and small boating in warmer months. The park is used for recreation and hosts outdoor events and seasonal plant displays.
The estate originated in the late 17th century and was expanded through the 18th century as successive electors added garden features and subsidiary buildings. Many of the palace interiors now house museums documenting the ruling Wittelsbach family and period furnishings.
The park sits about 6 kilometres west of Munich’s city centre in the Neuhausen-Nymphenburg borough and is readily reachable by public transport and bicycle from central Munich.
- Visitor access: Park grounds are open to the public year-round without an entrance fee; palace museums and Amalienburg have separate opening hours and admission charges.
- Notable structure: The Amalienburg was constructed during the 1730s and is a leading example of rococo hunting-lodge architecture with gilded interiors and mirrored rooms.
What to See #
- Nymphenburg Palace: The main palace complex begun in 1664 for the Bavarian electors, containing state rooms and museums within the central baroque palace building.
- Amalienburg: A small rococo hunting lodge in the park built in the 1730s, noted for its ornate interior decoration and mirrored rooms; it sits within the park rather than the main palace building.
- Great Parterre: The formal axial parterre in front of the palace with symmetrical gardens, fountains and avenues laid out in the Baroque manner and forming the palace's principal approach.
- Canals and lakes: A system of canals, lakes and tree-lined avenues that extend westwards into landscaped parkland and informal English-style gardens, used for walks and boating in summer.
- Botanical Garden (adjacent): The Munich Botanical Garden lies adjacent to the western end of the park and is part of the wider Nymphenburg cultural and green-space ensemble, with glasshouses and managed plant collections.
