Nymphenburg Palace is a large Baroque palace complex in Munich, Bavaria, originally begun in 1664 as the summer residence of the Wittelsbach rulers. The site combines a central palace block with a formal park and several subsidiary pavilions and museums.
The main palace presents grand state rooms and period interiors showcasing Bavarian court life, while the surrounding park contains several smaller 18th century pavilions such as the Amalienburg, Badenburg and Pagodenburg. The complex also includes the Marstall (former court stables) and a porcelain manufactory museum, making it a multi-part museum campus with architectural and decorative highlights.
Commissioned by Elector Ferdinand Maria and his wife Henriette Adelaide of Savoy in 1664, the palace was expanded and remodelled across the 18th century by successive Wittelsbach rulers, reflecting Baroque and Rococo tastes. Later centuries saw parts adapted as museums and preserved as a public park and cultural site.
Nymphenburg sits in the western part of Munich, adjacent to the Nymphenburg Canal and parklands, within the city limits and reachable by tram and S-Bahn from central Munich in about 20-30 minutes.
- Opening and park access: The palace complex dates from 1664 and is Munich's main Baroque residence with an extensive English-style park and waterways that are open year-round.
- Tours and ticketing: Many interior rooms are shown only on guided tours and parts of the grounds contain separate admission for special pavilions and museums.
