Archaeological Site Peat bog archaeological site where Nydam boat discovered
A bog site in South Denmark, Nydam Mose is known to archaeologists for Iron Age finds such as boats and weapons; visitors combine the peatland landscape with displays at nearby museums.
Nydam Mose is a bog site in southern Denmark known for major archaeological finds, most famously the Nydam Boat and associated weapons and artefacts. The discoveries are important for the study of late Iron Age and Migration Period northern Europe.
The bog itself is a protected wetland where archaeologists recovered wooden boats and large assemblages of weapons and tools; much of the original material was excavated in the mid-19th century and portions are held in Danish museums. The findspot is an archaeological landscape rather than a large visitor attraction, and replicas and exhibits based on the finds are shown in regional museums.
Systematic excavations in the 1850s and 1860s recovered a clinker-built oak boat and numerous weapons and equipment deposited in the bog, interpreted as offerings or war booty dating to the Migration Period, commonly placed to the 3rd to 5th centuries CE. The site has been central to research on boat-building and material culture of northern Europe in that era.
The bog lies in South Denmark (Sønderjylland/Southern Jutland), near the southeast Jutland coast. The archaeological finds were made at the wetland area known locally as Nydam Mose.
