The Nuratau Mountains are a mountain range in central Uzbekistan near the town of Nurata and neighbouring lowland and desert areas. The range forms a distinct local topographic feature with ridges and valleys that support steppe and scrub vegetation on its slopes.
The mountains are used seasonally for grazing and contain small rural settlements and traditional agricultural activity in valleys. They also provide habitat for regionally important flora and fauna adapted to semi-arid mountain conditions.
Geographically the Nuratau range lies within Uzbekistan’s interior, forming part of the transition between cultivated valleys and the Kyzylkum desert region.
- Ecology and human use: The range is relatively low compared with other Central Asian mountains and supports semi-arid slopes, dry steppe and pockets of woodland important for local pastoralism and biodiversity.
