Erected in the late 14th century by a local member of the gentry, the castle functioned as a fortified residence rather than a large royal fortress. It fell into ruin in later centuries; surviving fabric shows phases of medieval construction and later decay.
Sited beside the village after which it is named in rural south-west England, the castle sits within an agricultural landscape and is reached from nearby towns by minor roads.
