Nun Appleton Priory
Historical Site Former priory and estate in North Yorkshire
Site of a former priory and later country house near the River Ouse in North Yorkshire; visitors explore historic architecture, riverside walks and local history.
Nun Appleton Priory is a former medieval nunnery and later country estate near Appleton Roebuck in North Yorkshire, England. The site is notable for its association with the Fairfax family and the poet Andrew Marvell.
The visible remains on the site are limited and the later country house and parkland are the principal features associated with the location. The site is small in scale and does not function as a major visitor attraction with formal museum displays or regular guided access.
The priory was established in the medieval period and was dissolved during the 16th-century Dissolution of the Monasteries; the estate subsequently passed into secular ownership and became the location for a country house occupied by the Fairfax family. Andrew Marvell wrote “Upon Appleton House” in the 17th century for a member of that family.
The site sits close to the village of Appleton Roebuck, approximately 13 km (about 8 miles) south of York, on low-lying agricultural land in North Yorkshire.
- Literary connection: The site is closely associated with the Fairfax family and the 17th-century poem "Upon Appleton House" by Andrew Marvell, which describes the country house that later occupied the priory lands.
- Access: The original priory no longer survives as a standing medieval complex; the later country house and parkland occupy the site and there is no regular public access to formal interiors.
