How to Get to Nova Gorica
Nova Gorica sits on Slovenia's western edge and is well served by train and cross‑border bus links; the city's Nova Gorica railway station and bus station provide good access to Italy and Ljubljana. Trieste (TRS) and Ljubljana (LJU) are the main airports used by visitors.
Trieste - Friuli Venezia Giulia Airport (TRS): The closest international airport across the border. From TRS you can take a bus or train via Trieste to Gorizia/Nova Gorica; door‑to‑door time is roughly 40-70 minutes depending on connections and transfers, with typical shuttle or bus fares in the €6-€12 range.
Ljubljana Jože Pučnik Airport (LJU): Ljubljana is the primary Slovenian airport for the region. From LJU take the airport shuttle (≈30 minutes, ~€5-€6) into Ljubljana and then a direct intercity bus or train to Nova Gorica (see below). Travel time from Ljubljana to Nova Gorica by public transport is roughly 2-2.5 hours depending on service.
Train: Nova Gorica railway station is on the main west-east line and provides direct connections into Slovenia and across the border to the Italian rail network (Gorizia area). Trains to Ljubljana and to Italian destinations are available; cross‑border regional services are convenient for short international trips.
Bus: Nova Gorica also has a central bus station with frequent services to nearby towns and cities (Ljubljana, Trieste, Koper). Operators include Slovene regional carriers and international companies like FlixBus; bus travel times to Ljubljana are roughly 2-2.5 hours and fares vary by operator (often €8-€20 depending on type of service).
How to Get Around Nova Gorica #
Nova Gorica’s centre is compact and easy to explore on foot; the Italian town of Gorizia is a short walk across the border. Regional trains and buses serve the town, linking to Ljubljana, Trieste and other nearby destinations; taxis are available but cars are handy for exploring the wider area. Fares for local buses and regional trains are affordable (usually a few euros). Walking between the border towns is practical and popular.
