Nottingham Castle

Nottingham Castle is a historic castle site and museum complex on Castle Rock overlooking Nottingham city centre in England. The site traces its origins to a Norman fortification established shortly after the Conquest.

Modern visitor facilities include museum and art gallery displays housed in the later ducal mansion structure, interpretive exhibits about the site’s medieval and later history, and public access to the surrounding grounds. A prominent feature is the network of sandstone caves beneath Castle Rock, which are presented to visitors as part of the site’s interpretation.

A Norman castle was established on Castle Rock around 1068 and the fortified site evolved over centuries, including damage and partial demolition during the 17th-century civil conflicts. Later redevelopment on the site produced a ducal mansion and, in the 20th and 21st centuries, museum uses; the site underwent a major redevelopment and reopened to the public in 2021.

The castle stands on an elevated sandstone outcrop in the centre of Nottingham, England, immediately above the city’s central squares and historic streets.
