The chapel was commissioned to replace an earlier sanctuary destroyed during World War II; construction was carried out under Le Corbusier’s direction and the building was consecrated in 1955. Perched on a low hill near the town of Ronchamp in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, the chapel overlooks rolling countryside roughly 25 kilometres south of Belfort and is accessed by narrow local roads and a short walk up the hill.

The nearest major rail/TGV hub is Belfort-Montbéliard (Meroux); from Belfort town or the TGV station it is about a 20-30 minute drive to Ronchamp (taxi or rental car). There are local buses from Belfort and surrounding towns to Ronchamp; the chapel sits on a hill a short uphill walk from the visitor parking/stop.
