Noto Cathedral
Church Baroque cathedral dominating Noto's historic Sicilian center
Noto Cathedral crowns the Sicilian town’s Baroque center, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake. Tourists visit for its façade, interior chapels and panoramic views from the hilltop piazza.
The Noto Cathedral is an 18th century Sicilian Baroque cathedral in the town of Noto, southeast Sicily, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake that destroyed much of the city. It is one of the principal monuments of Noto’s reconstructed Baroque centre.
The interior contains a nave and side chapels typical of large Sicilian cathedrals, and the exterior is noted for its ornate Baroque facade and broad frontal steps leading down to the town square. The restored dome and facade are focal points for photographs and for views along the main Corso.
Construction of the present Baroque church dates to the city’s 18th century rebuilding after the 1693 earthquake; the cathedral has been altered and repaired several times since then. In 1996 part of the structure collapsed; the building underwent a major restoration in the 2000s and was returned to service.
The cathedral sits on the highest part of Noto’s historic centre, on the main Corso in the heart of the town. Noto is on Sicily’s southeastern coast, roughly 30 km from the city of Syracuse.
- Restoration history: The cathedral suffered a major collapse of its roof and part of the facade in 1996 and was the subject of an extensive restoration that returned it to use in the 2000s.
- Viewing point: Best views are from the east end of Corso Vittorio Emanuele, which frames the cathedral steps and Baroque facade.
