Noshaq

Mountain Afghanistan's highest mountain and Hindu Kush summit

Noshaq crowns Afghanistan as the country’s highest peak; alpine climbers attempt routes on its northwest ridge and organized expeditions approach from the Afghan side despite challenging logistics and high-altitude conditions.

Main image

Noshaq is a high mountain in Badakhshan Province in northeastern Afghanistan and the country’s highest point at 7,492 metres. It forms part of the western Hindu Kush range and sits near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border.

The mountain draws alpine climbers for its glacier routes and long, high-altitude ridges. Approaches are remote and typically involve long treks through the Wakhan region and high valleys; glaciers and ice routes dominate the upper slopes.

The peak has been a target for mountaineering since the mid-20th century and has seen expeditions from several countries. Political instability in the region has periodically limited access and organized climbing activity.

Noshaq lies in the high, sparsely populated terrain of northeastern Afghanistan, in the general area of the Wakhan Corridor in Badakhshan Province. The surrounding landscape is dominated by high valleys, steep ridges and glaciated slopes.

  • Elevation: 7,492 metres (24,580 ft) - the highest point in Afghanistan.
  • Border location: Sits on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border in Badakhshan Province, at the western end of the Hindu Kush's high peaks.
