Norwich Castle is a Norman-era stone castle in the city of Norwich, England, originally built as a defensive keep and now functioning as a museum and art gallery. The castle’s massive stone keep sits prominently on a medieval mound in the city centre.
The cylindrical stone keep and surrounding earthworks are the castle’s most prominent features, with museum galleries inside and around the keep exhibiting archaeology, local history and fine art. The site is used for permanent and temporary displays and educational programmes related to Norwich and the surrounding region.
Built by the Normans in the years after the Conquest, the castle served as a royal stronghold and administrative centre before later uses included a county gaol. During the 19th century the site was adapted and restored to accommodate public museum displays.
Situated in central Norwich near the River Wensum and the city’s historic core, the castle lies within easy walking distance of Norwich Cathedral and the university area.
